Comments about Therm-a-Rest Ventra Blanket - Regular:

This is a long review as it is the first and I spent time e-mailing the company and additonal research before spending the money. This product worked exactly as advertised and the only thing that curbs my total enthusiasm is the price ... but I've spent more on bags I subsequently gave away to family members. This is my third attempt in the last decade at finding a light-weight, 3-season, bag that was comfortable to sleep in.

I am not an ultra-light fast-packer. When I hike I prefer to do less than 10 miles per day in search of trout in the White/Green/Smokey Mtns; if the fishing is good I may hike less or not at all. I'm 6' and 190lbs.

I bought two therma-rest "sleep systems", which are the sheets and blankets to attach to therma-rest pads. The sheets were a no-brainer it was the top layer I focused on. A product specialist for Therma-rest I traded e-mails summed it up well with: "I'd take the Technical blanket to the backyard but the Ventra to the backcountry." She helped me identify other products I might consider as a top layer if I just purchased the sheet which was really helpful and would have been less expensive alternatives. Ultimately, I decided the incremental $ was worth having a system that was designed to work together which it does really well. The sheet is snug to the pad so it doesnt move when you do and can be thrown in the washer and dryer upon return. The blanket footbox has a feature which keeps it under the pad so your feet are comfy. Its sides have extra material and down which prevent air drafts from sneaking in even when turning over. I found I could easily twist and turn and roll during the night without tieing me and the bag into a knot!

When hiking with my girlfriend, who has the identical system, we snapped the outer edges to the sheet but then only the bottom snaps on the two blankets together so it was more or less open in the middle. This allowed us to be together and both be comfortable as she gets cold and I get hot. When the temp dropped (mid 40s) it was easy enough for me to roll around under my blanket without disrupting her as the two blankets were essentially independent.

My only concern is whether the snaps will hold up over the long term but that will be a realively easy fix if it becomes a problem.

In summary, after a long search, I think I've finally found my light weight 3-season backpacking solution ...
