Comments about Merrell Outland Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots - Men's:

Went to my local REI and after trying several boots, these felt really good on my feet. It is hard to comment on their sizing because I have a very diverse range of sizing on my shoes. Depending on type of shoe and brand, I can fluctuate between a 10.5 and a 13. The size I purchased was a 12. Note that the REI worker said that they tend to run small. Ordering a size larger may be advised. They felt good in the store so the next day I packed up my backpack, the same weight as I was going to be carrying in the smoky mountains, and I headed out to my local trail. They say a good boot doesn't need to be broken in. These felt good from the get go. I never felt like they needed to be broken in. Fast forward one week: I just got back from the Smoky Mountains today. I did a 3 day hike including a trek to the top of Mount Leconte and back down Alum Cave trail. Total I hiked about 16 miles of rough, rocky, and often wet terrain in temperatures ranging from mid 60s to low 50s. The boots felt great the whole time. No sore spots. No pressure spots. My toes didnt jam down into the front of the boot. The grip seemed adequate, and I hiked up and down some pretty steep inclines/declines. I walked through several puddles as it rained one of the nights. The boots kept my feet warm and cozy. Overall I am very happy with my purchase. I cannot comment on durability as this was my first trip with them. Overall, they still look brand new after three days on the trails. I also cannot comment on whether or not this would be a good winter boot as the lows only dipped into the high 40s.
To note, my backpack was under 30 pounds. A heavier backpack might have yielded a different opinion. I hope this comment is detailed enough for the purchaser. I love REI and they always stand behind their products. I never hesitate to buy from them. You might pay a little more but they make up in customer satisfaction. Period.

Comments about Merrell Outland Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots - Men's:

I foolishly bought these "boots" yesterday at a local store without any research. They were a last minute purchase for a long dayhike after realizing that I needed something lightweight and breathable for short summer trips.

I bought the low version, not the mid. I did try on both at the store and i decided on the low since the mids gave very little ankle support anyway. When fitting, I instantly noticed that each Merrell boot I tried on was WAY oversized. I have consistantly been in a size 12.5 to 13 since 7th grade. The size I went with for the Merrells? 11. After 14.5 miles I realized that I probably could have gotten the size 10.5 and been just fine. Their sizes are ridiculous.. way off.

Our trip yesterday was 14.5 miles on one of the worst sections of PA's infamously rocky Appalachian Trail. One section was the famour Knife Edge (from the Nat. Geo. cover photo from the 70's. Overall, the boots were great. Plenty of traction (except on large rocks when wet), waterproof (or at least sufficiently resistant), and they seem to be built well and should prove to be durable enough.

The downside is the breathability and support. There is virtually none of either. My feet normally stay very dry, even in crazy heat in the summer time. Yesterday they were soaked. I went through three pairs of socks. Over rocks you feel nearly every little poke and pinch. Should you happen to slip on a wet rock as i did yesterday (and as everyone does on the PA section of the AT) you may find your ankles caught (and then twisted) in some very unforgiving places. The toe area is also not very sturdy, which leaves your toes vulnerable to everything. Twice I had to rest after stubbing my toes on pointy rocks.

As much as this may seem to be a negative review, it really isn't. In the end, these boots are great at what they were made for... day hikers and other mild outdoor adventurers. If you're looking for lots of support or breathability for summer time, or are a hiker in the rocky sections of PA or elsewhere, avoid this boot.

Comments about Merrell Outland Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots - Men's:

These boots have to be the best I have found in a long while. They so far have lasted through numerous trips of 50 miles or more with a load of about 30-40 pouns and have held up great and are so comfortable. Even after a long day of hiking there were no blisters or pains. Not to mention pretty waterproof. But the only problem is there is no ventalation and this would leave my feet soaked in sweat and the boot would be wet for rest of the day but do dryout fast after taken off.

Comments about Merrell Outland Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots - Men's:

I had the boots now for almost a year. Wore them in the Smokeys in early fall(no slipping on the trail to Ramsey's cascades after rain) and in New York in mid spring for a week. Was also snowshoeing and just walking in knee deep snow w/ them. They always kept me warm and comfortable. They didn't need any break-in at all in my opinion and they accompanied me on several skiing trips. I'm taking them to Yosemite w/ me. The shoe is warm though and I had to buy an alternative for summer hikes.

Comments about Merrell Outland Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots - Men's:

I have backpacked in these boots for 4 days now (in Patagonia) and this included an 18 mile day with a 35lb pack. They are definately comfortable out of the box and provide plenty of underfoot protection for a light boot. Ankle support is good also. They provide terrific traction and appear to be waterpoof although this has not realy been severely tested yet. My only reservation is that they are quite warm and do result in sweaty feet in warm weather. I think this is probably a problem with all "waterproof/breathable" boots. I would not recomend them for hot weather summer hiking but for everything else they seem fine.
