Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
I use these pants for my biological fieldwork in temps down to 40F or about 5C. I really use the pockets. I've owned perhaps 7 pairs over the past two years (2006-2007). The fabric is hard wearing, cool and lightweight. The 2006 model had large mesh in the front pockets which would rip out in no time rendering the front pocket useless for anything small or heavy. While the 2007 model still had mesh in the front pockets it was tighter and none of my pairs have ripped out yet. It would be my preference if REI would do away with mesh in the pockets altogether. The rear pockets on the 2006 model were a good design as there was NO exposed stitching on the seat of the pants. The 2007 model however was a major step backwards in that the pocket was stitched directly to the seat fabric. This leaves the stitching exposed to abrasion on the rock-chairs one invariably sits on. I first relised this issue when I felt my knife slip down my pant leg. Needless to say I can no longer keep anything in the rear packets. The right side cargo pocket is zippered. Every single one of my pants zippers has broken. A couple have even broken shut so that I had to cut my cell phone out of the pocket! For my purposes, I'd make the zipper about 3/4 inch longer to be able to put larger things in the pocket--like my hands. The left cargo pocket is perfect, though a zipper would be nice. A couple of years ago the Columbia had a pair of zip-off pants that had double front pockets one of which was zippered. This was a really handy feature. It is a bummer to loose your keys 10 miles from the paved road only to realize your hide-a-key jiggled off someplace in the last couple thousand miles since you used it last. My two last comments deal with the "belt." The built-in webbing belt ought to be done away with and real belt loops installed on the pants. This way an actual money belt can be worn when condition warrant. 10/31/07 and I just purchased 2 more pairs to last me until 2008 model so despite my gripes they are a fine, comfortable pant that I am buying again.

REI, please get your vendors to make more 28" inseam pants! Great sizing w/o need for add'l tailoring. Great for camping, hikes, or just weeding in the backyard.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
These pants are one of the two that come in 28" inseam. I own two pairs of these pants and wear them constantly hiking and backpacking. They dry fast, so you can use them for swimming. I ususally load up the cargo pockets while hiking and they are still very comfortable.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
Great pants that come in sizes short enough to fit me. No need to alter due to the variety of sizes. Very versatile. Have hiked in them as pants in the cooler morning, then converted them to shorts in the warmer afternoon. Great for travel wear as well.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
I would say that the Sahara pant/short combo has been the best wearing, best fitting, and longest lasting clothing I've ever worn. I love the fact that you can just unzip the pant leg off and go when it's warm, or when it's chilly, zip the legs back on. I typically store the legs inside the pockets when I'm moving around. These are my summer and fall short/pants. I wish REI would sell more of their pant lineup with 28" inseams. Great work in whoever it is that has spent time working on improving this product. I've ordered over 6 pairs in the last 3 years.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
I was planning on using these as travel pants for a 6 week trip in the summer. Unfortunately I'm saddened with how baggy these pants fit in the thighs. As shorts they're perfect, but once you zip the legs back on it's hammer time. They'd be ok for just around the campsite but I'd feel too ridiculous going out with these. Baggy fits are not for shorties.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
I'd prefer a 29" inseam, but these do the job fine with boots, ok tucked into socks on the bike (they slip out some days), and well for travelling. You can drop an airline or road meal all over them and sponge out in the bogs. They wash and dry quickly in a motel room.
Us shorter chaps don't have a lot of choice, so I buy these when a member offer or sale comes up and wear them most of the time unless I really have to look smart. The earlier pairs are clearly worn, on one of these the zip handle has broken off, on the other I had to sew over where the zip end is broken, and the friction belt loses grip as it ages. I still wear the old ones for mucky jobs.Like others, I'd prefer belt loops. If you're an XL normally, check out the L - the XL is like wearing a tent and the L is quite forgiving if you miss some excercise and pad out a bit. I'd recommend them to a shorter friend; taller people have a lot more options. I'd like some darker colours, the brown was ok and a black would be very useful - I'd buy two pairs of black right away.
Service and delivery comments:
Nary a hiccup with service or delivery, REI have always been very helpful. I wish they had a branch in London

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
I bought two pairs last year with the 28" inseam and they are just now starting to give up, the material. This is exceptional because I wear them constantly. Great way to lighten up the travel kit, with their zip off pants and light material. No real negatives to speak of. Will pick up a couple more pairs in the near future. REI sell this pant with the 28" inseam in more colors and add more styles for the vertically challenged folks and they will sell.

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
pro: spacious, nice design, sporty looks
con: pants are simply too short for the size bum, picture doesn't show that, looks great, but mosquito's will like it too. One size larger will fit the legs, but leaves loads of space for the bum you probably don't have

Comments about REI Sahara Convertible Pants - Men's 28'' Inseam:
I own five pair and love them. They fit great. I use them on the trail and off. I am rough on my clothes and they hold up well. My older pairs show a little wear, but still look great. Hooray for the 28" inseam. Five stars despite the cargo zipper that breaks.
