Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
This jacket was a big disappointment. The other reviewers here probably never tried this outside of the lower 48 states. They certainly did not quantify their reviewed conditions. In Bering Sea winter storms, I usually depend on Eddie Bauer or other for -40, etc but thought that I would try this newer design for lighter weight and packability. I am returning the SubZero. The SubZero jacket is nicely made but dangerously inadequate for SubZero conditions. It should be renamed NearZero not SubZero; and it should not command the sales price that it does.I found no written temperature ratings for this jacket’s specifications. REI and Mountain Hardware staff thought and wrote that this jacket would be adequate -20F to -40F, which nearly resulted in disastrous consequences in Manchuria and Siberia. At only -25F and 10mph wind in darkness, with two layers of long-sleeve expedition weight polythermal underwear + one layer of turtleneck cotton long-sleeve shirt + two layers of expedition weight long-sleeved fleece, five hours of activity was painfully cold for the core torso. Vaseline in an inside pocket of this jacket froze. If the temperature had dropped to -40F, I might no longer be alive to write this review. At -5F to +5F for prolonged exposure of 5+ hours, fewer underlayers worked fine with this jacket. If you do not leave the continental US, this jacket is probably fine, even for Montana or North Dakota. However, for colder conditions, this jacket is most inadequate.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
This jacket performs very well for the uses for which it was intended and at its price point. It is lightweight, fairly streamlined, and somewhat short in length allowing considerable freedom of movement. It is very compatible with climbing harnesses It is also fairly water resistant, but by no means water proof as evidenced by the non-tapped seams.
To those reviewers who downgrade this jacket because it isn't warm enough or water proof enough, let me just say that these aren't flaws in the jacket. Mountain Hardware and other manufacturers offer numerous other down jackets from which you can choose among several higher levels of insulation or degrees of water proofness right up to the extreme. These same manufacturers offer still other down jackets that offer considerably less warmth than the Sub Zero SL. It makes no sense to downgrade this product simply because it is too warm or too cold for your intended use or because of your own inability to choose the right product for your specific needs.

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
I purchase this jacket to start dabbling in mountaineering; I hope to test the jacket on the summit of Rainer soon. Living up in MN with temps getting way below zero this jacket preformed great in heavy sub zero winds and driving snow especially for any extended outdoor.
I am glad I read all the reviews, because of them I purposely bought the jacket one size larger than normal and it not only accommodates multi layered clothing but give me excellent converge front and back.

The sizing is just right for free movement--and layering--you can even fit a down sweater inside. Thank goodness DarthAnonymous came back alive! For Siberia and Alaska in winter he really needed the higher-loft, baffled-construction Absolute Zero parka (and pants), or full suit, [...]

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
This jacket is probably the warmest thing that I've ever worn. Its very durable, my pack has eaten jackets in the past and after a few trips with this one, It's looking like new. My only problem is that it seems just a bit short in the torso, other than that, its light, warm, durable and comfortable. Oh, and the hood feels like home on a cold day at the crag

GREAT coat, EXCEPT it is so short that it BARELY covers my bellybutton. Hated to return it, but if it doesn't fit ...

Can take on cold weather by itself without having to wear other layers. Only problem is when it gets too wet or sweaty on inside it dries slowly but other than that I love this jacket!

I just got this parka and used it for a Mt. Whitney climb. It's everything that you're looking for! The Mountain Hardwear folks definately put pride in their gear. I'd have to say that it's a bargain for the protection it provides.
Comments about Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket - Men's:
go find the nicest down bag on the rack and turn it into a jacket and you will have the sub zero parka. bit much for anything less than the greater ranges. great as a basecamp jacket. all in all a great jacket that wont let you get cold. the question of durability has not come up with mine as of yet but then again i dont use it that often because the greater ranges are not my playground so i find it to be too much in most cases.
