Comments about Duracell AA Alkaline Batteries - 8 Pack:
Ok... many will consider me an environmental troglodyte for not jumping on the re-chargeable battery bandwagon, but the regular old, readily available (around the world), reliable (new, 100% power) and ready to use (long shelf life) alkaline battery, like the Duracel Coppertop, will be my power source of choice (at least until they invent portable fusion reactors).
BTW, how's that for alliteration?! :-P
The problem with re-chargeable batteries is that they are simply not 100% reliable and ready all of the time.
They become less efficient over time and repeated chargings, like you may get a 100% charge the first few times and then they start to degrade and eventually you'll find them barely holding a charge for an hour. And the problem is, you never know at which point in the life of the battery you started to use it. I don't want to play guessing games with vital equipment that I rely on. Just let me pop in some fresh Duracels.
Furthermore, there is a problem with all rechargeable batteries commonly called "memory effect". This is occurs when batteries are not fully charged and/or not fully discharged when they are replaced. Even relatively new batteries may soon charge up to a certain level (like 80%) if it is constantly in and out of a charger at a certain point (like an 8 hour workshift).
Probably the worst feature of rechargeable batteries for me in ANY electronics is when companies create a special "proprietary" battery for their device, or worse yet, an internal rechargeable battery. So guess what? You are in the middle of Alaska or some jungle village in Costa Rica and you NEED a replacement EL-5782-A or a CR123 battery for your camera, GPS, headlamp, etc., or you need to find a 120v outlet to plug your device into for 8 hours.
I carry an 8 pack of Duracels around with me, but I also have the reassurance that I'd probably find some AAs or AAAs in some quaint general store or mercado in the boonies.
When I buy new electronic devices now, I always ask about the power supply, because I prefer to use just regular ol' Duracels.
