Environmental stewardship ranks as one of REI's top priorities. True to that mission, we offer a wide selection of products made with the environment in mind.

Currently, retailers use a variety of terms to describe such products including eco-friendly, green and environmentally friendly.

We prefer the term eco-conscious. Under this umbrella, we include our own line of REI ecoSensitive™ products.

What Makes a Product Eco-Conscious?

We think of an eco-conscious product as any product made with materials and processes that have a gentler impact on the environment than is typical for that product's category.

To identify eco-conscious items, we look for key specifications in the product information provided to us by manufacturers.

Here are some examples of these eco-conscious specifications, arranged by product category:

Boats and Flotation

  • Organic kapok flotation
  • PVC-free inflatables
  • Recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate)
  • Recycled polyethylene

Books

  • Chlorine-free pulping (paper manufacture)
  • Forest Sustainability Council Certified paper
  • Soy- or water-based inks
  • Recycled paper

Clothing and Outerwear

  • Bamboo
  • Hemp
  • Organic cotton
  • Organic wool
  • PLA (polyactic acid, a.k.a. polyactide)
  • Recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate)

Camping

  • Organic/biodegradable (e.g. soaps, wipes)
  • Recyclable (e.g. fuel canisters, water bottles)

Food

  • Organic ingredients (per USDA guidelines)

Footwear

  • Hemp
  • Organic cotton

  • Recycled rubber/EVA
